[Located: North East of Delhi]
Rishikesh is the self-proclaimed yoga capital of the world.
Home to more than 100,000 people, the low-lying city straddles the Ganges River near where it emerges from the Himalayan Mountains. It's bordered by massive national parks and elephant sanctuaries.
Rishikesh is home to more Ashrams than any other city in India and it has become a spiritual mecca for global tourists since the early 1960's when it was popularized by a visit by the Beetles. Across the Universe and the lyric "Jai Guru Deva Om" was inspired by yoga here.
Artisanal influences from Rajistan, Delhi, and the coastal South are strong, and it's a great place to find a melange of goods, people, and devotees from all over the country.
